Vancouver-based Kababayang Pilipino of British Columbia headlines this year’s Scotiabank Dance Centre Open House on September 15 with a special hour-long matinee performance at 2 p.m.

Kababayang Pilipino is celebrating its 25th year of promoting Filipino folk heritage through the presentation of authentic Filipino dance, music and drama. The group’s matinee performance will include a 40 minute performance composed of three parts: Lumad, Barrio and Mindanao with a 15 minute artist talkback.

The Dance Centre’s open house provides the public a chance to sample various dance styles through open classes, studio showings and events. Aside from Kababayang Pilipino, other participating companies and artists include Karen Flamenco, Shot of Scotch, Polymer Dance and Anderson Performance Clinic. Also, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. is a pop-up dance writing lab with writers and editors from The Dance Current magazine.


Pre-registration to participate is not required. Below is a list of activities for September 15.

11 a.m. to 12 noon

Class: Pow Wow with Nyla Carpentier of Raven Spirit Dance. An introduction to the history and culture of Pow Wow, covering the basic steps of different styles.

Workshop: Contemporary dance artist Justine A. Chambers shares some of the practices developed through the creation process for her new project Semi-precious. Intermediate to advanced level dance experience required.

Talk: Stuart Anderson of Anderson Performance Clinic and an osteopath from his team leads an information session on osteopathy.

12 noon to 1 p.m.

Studio Showing: Work generated by contemporary dance artists Kelly McInnes, IleannaCheladyn and Hana Rutka during a training intensive directed by Artist-in-Residence Helen Walkley

Class: Nia with Jasjit Rai. Nia is a body and soul practice blending dance and healing arts with dynamic energizing moves, exploring the joy of movement through conscious choice.

Class: Ballet with Linda Arkelian. High energy and inspiring class offers the chance to develop technique and discover new ways to move.

1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Class: Contemporary dance with Polymer Dance, including a technique and ensemble improvisation.

Class: Highland dance with Shot of Scotch.

Class: Caribbean Dance Fitness with Nao – a mix of Latin, Caribbean and folkloric movements.

2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Performance: Kababayang Pilipino is BC’s leading Filipino performance ensemble, promoting Filipino folk heritage through authentic dance, music, song and drama. This special presentation highlights the rich diversity and culture of the Philippines with a program of exciting and beautiful dances.

Class: Swing with Philippe Bigotte/Dancing Bee Dance Studio. Includes the basic swing step, Lindy Charleston, and some couple moves. Partner not required.

Talk: Mental Performance Coaching with Stuart Anderson, Anderson Performance Clinic. An introduction to the principles of performance psychology, including dealing with performance anxiety, and visualization techniques.

3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Class: Hip hop with Kim Sato, Artistic Director of Project Soul.

Studio Showing: Daina Ashbee shares new work developed during the Yulanda M Faris Choreographers Program. Featuring dancer Lorena Ceraso, and followed by a Q&A session.

Class: Middle Eastern belly dance with Maki Dance.

4 to 5 p.m.

Class: Flamenco with Karen Flamenco.

Studio Showing: Vanessa Goodman/Action at a Distance shares work and processes she has been developing during the Yulanda M Faris Choreographers Program.
