Members of the Filipino Students Association at the University of Ottawa during their annual general meeting on September 27, 2018.

In October, the Filipino Students Association at the University of Ottawa launched Pinoys on Parliament (POP), a conference aimed at young Filipino-Canadians.

The central theme of POP hinges on the question, “How can young Filipino-Canadians succeed in a field that they are passionate about?”

To address this, Filipino leaders from different fields will be speaking at the event about their own career paths.

Among them is Dr. Rey Pagtakhan, the first Filipino federal cabinet minister, and Abby Albino, a public relations professional who is notable for being involved in the announcement of the partnership between the Toronto Raptors and OVO (Toronto rapper Drake’s clothing brand).

According to the POP website “When members of the Filipino Students Association at the University of Ottawa found themselves discussing how they did not see Filipino-Canadians represented in government and politics, the idea of POP was born”.

Filipinos are a large minority population in the country and it is important for the younger generation, especially those who are first-generation Filipino-Canadian to have leaders they are able to look up to. POP is an event that will give them this opportunity.

Attendees will also be able to meet and network with other Filipino youth while exploring the nation’s capital.

Pinoys on Parliament will happen from February 23 to February 24, 2019 in Ottawa. Visit pinoysonparliament.wordpress.com to register.
