 April 1, 2023 - Dahong Pilipino, the only Filipino community and business directory in BC is celebrating its 30th Anniversary with a dinner dance at the Fraserview Banquet Hall on Friday, May 19th.

Dahong Pilipino was started by Leonardo “Ding” Cunanan in 1993 to serve as a guide for the local Filipino community and other BC residents in search of Filipino businesses, shops, Filipino organizations, and connections. In addition to its print publication, it now has an online version to help Filipinos in Canada keep track of developments in their home country as well as in their local communities in BC.  It is now managed and operated by Leo Cunanan Jr with the support of Marilyn Cunanan, co-founder with Ding Cunanan and now Dahong Pilipino adviser. 

In attendance at this anniversary dinner and dance are Filipino entrepreneurs, advertisers and their supporters. Joining them are city of Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, BC Attorney General Niki Sharma, MP Don Davies, MLA Mable Elmore, MLA Jagrup Bar, MLA Janet Routledge, MLA Susie Chant, Burnaby Councillor Maita Santiago and North Vancouver School Board Trustee LailaneTumaneng. MLA Mable Elmore will do the honors of presenting the advertiser awards. 

Advertisers include Mortgage Specialists, Mortgage Brokers/Architects, Financial Planners, Lawyers, Immigration Consultants, Airlines,Travel & Travel Companions,  Hotel Industry,  Doctors, Physiotherapist,  Denturist, Acupuncturists, Massage Therapist, Hearing Aid, Martial Arts, Tattoo Artists, Insurance agents, Car Dealers, Auto Body Repairs, Memorials, Hair Stylists, Schools, Cargo, Money Remittances, Travel Agencies, Cosmetics And Religious Supplies, Optical,  Roofing Industry, Restoration, Installations & Repairs, Movers/Rubbish Removal, Residential Renovation, Heating And Ventilation, Driving Instructors, Promoters, Restaurant/Catering, Food Distributors, Organizations/Community Engagement, and Printing Presses. 

The evening’s entertainment  features a live band – the Vagabonds – and a DJ and line dancing with audience participation. 

Some advertisers will have tables displaying their products at the entrance to the Banquet Hall.  Canadian Filipino.Net has been provided a table to promote and sell its new book on the contemporary history of Filipinos in Canada titled INDOMITABLE CANADIAN FILIPINOS.  Emmy Buccat, in charge of the book’s marketing and sales will be selling the book at promotional prices of $25 for paperback and $35 for hard cover.  The cover of the book was designed by Leo Cunanan Jr, president and publisher of Dahong Pilipino.

Meyen “Marilynn” Quigley has a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of the Philippines. In Victoria, she has worked for BC public services and in programs for persons with mental health and substance abuse issues and persons experiencing homelessness. She has a master’s degree in intercultural administration from the School for International Training in Vermont and a graduate certificate in professional communications management from Royal Roads University.

Eleanor R. Laquian has written four best-selling books, and co-authored four others with husband Prod Laquian. She has served in various capacities at the University of British Columbia’s Institute of Asian Research as manager of administration and programs; editor and chair, publications committee; and primary researcher of the Asian Immigration to Canada project. She has a degree in journalism from Maryknoll College in the Philippines, and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of the Philippines. She did postgraduate studies at the School of Public Communications,  Boston University in the U.S.
